Professional Learning Community - Definition and Goals
The Professional Learning Community (PLC) is a collaborative effort among colleagues within a particular work environment or field. It is often used in schools as a way to organize teachers into working groups. The PLC structure is one of continuous learning, active collaboration, democratic participation, and consensus building about the school environment and culture. The members of the PLC meet frequently and determine how to attain the desired environment and culture.
In the PLC context, educators discuss best practices, share knowledge, observe one another, and encourage each other's success. PLC members work toward the goals of school improvement and greater student achievement.
"As the school moves forward, every professional in the building must engage with colleagues in
the ongoing exploration of three crucial questions that drive the work of those within a
professional learning community:
• What do we want each student to learn?
• How will we know when each student has learned it?
• How will we respond when a student experiences difficulty in learning?"
