Lady Justice - The scales that she holds represent the impartiality with which justice is served and the sword signifies the power that is held by those making the decision.
Criminal justice
is the system of practices, and organizations, used by national and local governments, directed at maintaining social control, deterring and controlling crime, and sanctioning those who violate laws with criminal penalties.
It is also defined as "the procedure by which criminal conduct is investigated, arrests made, evidence gathered, charges brought, defenses raised, trials conducted, sentences rendered, and punishment carried out."
In essence, the Criminal Justice system is compromised of three components: the Police, Courts, and Corrections.
We will be studying these three components in depth throughout the semester. In addition to studying the system, we will be putting our knowledge into practice by running Teen Court trials in our classroom.
